Land Rover to enter the small SUVs market with a new stylish LRX

Although being put on the chopping block by parent company Ford, Land Rover is showing no signs of slowing down in sales. The new concept of LRX could be on the verge of entering the market of small SUVs.

The LRX is the first new Land Rover since Gerry McGovern became the company’s design director. He was the design director at Linclon-Mercury. McGovern describes the LRX as a cross coupe. If the LRX can make it to the production stage. It will be positioned as a premium car for customers who want the benefits of the 4X4 and the visual presence of a larger vehicle, but in more compact package.  The look of the LRX will be totally different, as seen in motor show, The car now becomes more stylish and it seem it will enter the race with the BMW X5 to win the best small SUVs car award.

Based on the shortened LR2 platform, the LRX has a streamlined profile and is 4350mm long and 1550 mm high. It has a lower ground clearance than the LR2 and a huge 20 inch wheels. The LRX boosts signature styling cues of its bigger floating roof and short overhangs.

Normally, the LRX will get four wheel drive and LR hill descent controls with special version of the Terrain Response system. The LRX also gets a new ‘Eco’ mode for lower emission urban driving. At the moment, there are no engine or power details of the LRX have been announced, however these details may be clear at the next Detroit motor show in 2008.
