Preparing Your Vehicle for Transport
With an increasing number of people purchasing autos online and an economy that dictates frequent movement; there is a good chance that you will be faced with shipping your vehicle at some point. While professional shippers are experienced and reliable for the most part, there is always the possibility for something to happen on the road, so it is up to you to make sure all necessary steps are taken to protect your property. The following guidelines will help minimize the possibility of vehicular damage while in transport; as well as ensure collection of compensation should any damage occur.
Clean it out
It’s amazing how many people forget to remove their personal items from their cars. Removing all items from inside the auto, including the trunk, ensures the items remain in your possession, as well as reduces the chance of blemishes to the interior. An automotive carrier’s insurance won’t cover items left inside of a vehicle, and loose items can rattle around and cause damage that too will not be covered.
Wash It Off
Carefully wash and inspect the exterior of the vehicle. Make note of any existing damage. Photograph the car from all angles and document when the pictures were taken. In the unfortunate circumstance that damage does occur, this will give you evidence you need to file a claim.
Check Under the Hood
Even though an automobile will hardly be driven during a haul, it is important to make sure that the vehicle is mechanically sound enough to get on and off of the trailer. Check the battery, the tires and all fluids to make sure the car can be driven safely. Notify the shipper if you have been experiencing any recent problems, and be sure that they are aware of any leaks that could possibly soil another vehicle.
Check the Gas
It’s best to keep the gas tank under half full. You don’t want to run out of gas driving onto the trailer, but any more is just extra weight.
Secure the Exterior
Parts that can possibly be broken while on the trailer need to be secured or removed. Fold the mirrors to the sides of the vehicle, lower the antenna and close all windows. Take off any removable exterior customizations. All convertible tops should be securely closed, flip-up headlights down and tool boxes tightly shut. Inside the vehicle, remove radio faceplate if possible and make sure any aftermarket speakers are tightly in place.
Turn Off the Alarm
The final step is to make sure that the alarm is turned off. If you can’t figure out how to disable it yourself, contact your local dealer and they will be able to help. If neither option is possible, be sure to provide the shipper with information on how to shut it off should it be activated.
These are only the basic steps and in no way constitute all action that should be taken. Be sure the contact your shipper beforehand and ask about any special preparations he recommends. Also, should your vehicle be rare, usual or extremely customized you should look for a company that specializes in moving such vehicles. Everyone shares the goal of a safe and timely shipment, so don’t hesitate to ask any questions you may have.
